A blow to the head or a blow to the body that makes the head move rapidly back and forth can cause the brain to bounce against the skull. If this trauma disrupts the normal function of the brain, the person can suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Depending on the amount of neurological disruption or damage the brain suffers, TBIs are classified as mild, moderate or severe.

Mild, Moderate and Severe Brain Injuries
A mild TBI or concussion may or may not cause a brief loss of consciousness; a person can have a brain injury without ever losing consciousness. People with mild TBI may suffer symptoms such as feeling lightheaded or dizzy, exhaustion, mild to moderate headaches, blurry vision, tinnitus, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, emotional changes, confusion, memory problems and other cognitive problems.
People who suffer a moderate TBI may experience some of the symptoms of mild TBI with additional conditions such as continuous or worsening headaches, vomiting, nausea, aphasia (speech difficulty), pupil dilation, convulsions, seizures, weakness or numbness in the extremities, and poor coordination. Emotional and behavioral symptoms such as heightened confusion or irritability may also occur.
Severe brain injuries often exhibit many of the same signs as moderate brain injuries, although the symptoms may be worse. In the most severe cases, the injury victim may be in a vegetative state or a coma. Wrongful death is also a possibility in the worst TBI cases.
