Distracted driving is a very serious matter and should not be taken lightly. Many people are often unaware that they are even habitual distracted drivers. Something so little as checking on your child in the backseat or turning the radio station, for two seconds your eyes are not focused on that road ahead of you, an accident occurs. What’s even scarier is that it’s the leading cause of death amongst teens in the U.S. We need to all become more aware of this selfish action and save our families, and anyone else.
Fortunately, there are ways that we can be more precautious and more aware about distracted driving. Cell phones seem to be a huge problem and it’s quite simple, the call or text can wait. If it’s that important, pull over and take the call. If you are a parent, talk to your kids about how important it is to pay attention to the road, especially when friends are in the car. Grow a trust and bond with them through driving and things can be a lot safer. There are even pretend car crash videos that will make anyone think twice about not paying attention ever again. Which then leads us to eating and drinking while driving. We don’t think that taking our hands off the wheel, or looking down for whatever it is we need in our car, for 5 seconds is that long. But think about how fast you are going and the distance a car can go in that amount of time, you could have double or even tripled a football field.
In closing, we need to spread more awareness. If you are in the car with someone and they begin to text or take a call, stand up for yourself and tell them it can wait. Not only are they putting you at risk, but themselves, and others that are driving near. Paying attention while driving is the main focus in being a successful driver. Now that you have the knowledge, you have the power to help save lives and make people aware of the dangers of what will happen if you drive while being distracted.
